Cross-Media Advertising

Cross-media advertising is when you link your advertisments together. For example, we will link our trailer, poster and magazine front cover together by using related texts, layout and colour.

Photoshop - New Media Technologies

To make and edit our magazine cover and poster my group and I will be using Photoshop. With Photoshop you can edit and enhance pictures, this will become very useful in making our final products as they will look professional.

iMovie - New Media Technologies

iMovie is a video editing software, that allows people with Mac's to edit and make their own movies. When using iMovie you can edit video clips, add titles, and add music. With iMovie you can also upload a voice over, trim video and audio clips, and use transactions such as fade in, fade out.

When making our teaser trailer, my group and I will use iMovie to edit and make it.

This is the current issue of Empire magazine. As you can see it is advertising the film 'Kick-Ass'. The first thing that draws you to this magazine cover is the bold, bright green text. This magazine cover contains alot of bright, eye-catching colours. These all makes you want to pick up the magazine as it stands out and makes the reader want to pick it up.

The magazine cover's style is themed with the genre of the film which is action. We can see this by the Empire logo having the effect of being written in blood and the main character of the film looks like he's fighting.

Magazine Questionnaire Conclusion

From our magazine conclusion I have found out that alot of people read film magazines. It is also very important to have a very good, eye-catching front cover as this can determine whether people buy it. In our magazine cover, my group and I will use bold colours and texts as this makes the magazine stand out, which then means people will pick it up. Also, we will include alot of information on our front cover as we found out from the questionnaire, that people like this.

Magazine Questionnaire

1. Are you male or female?
• Male = 14
• Female = 16

2. How old are you?
• 0-16 = 4
• 17-25 = 16
• 26-35 = 4
• 36-49 = 3
• 50+ = 3

3. Do you read film magazines?
• Yes = 24
• No = 6

4. Do you think the front cover of a magazine makes you want to read it?

• Yes = 30
• No = 0

5. Do you think bold colours and texts makes a magazine stand out?
• Yes = 30
• No = 0

6. If you see a film advertised in a magazine, does it make you want to see it?
• Yes = 14
• No = 16

7. Do you like front covers that give a lot away about what’s inside or what it’s about?
• Yes = 19
• No = 11

My group and I also videoed some of the people when answering the questionnaire.

Transformers Poster

This is one of the many posters advertising 'Transformers'. This poster is effective as it has a big image of Optimus Prime - the leader of the 'Autobots' as the main focus of the poster. Due to the fact that Transformers was advertised on such a wide scale, everybody knew who was who before even seeing the film. Also, there has never been another film like this - it's one of its kind.

There is also the Transformers logo at the bottom of the poster. This is in the same font as it is in the trailer, magazines etc. Audiences then become familiar with the logo and remember it.

Poster Questionnaire Conclusion

From our poster questionnaire my group and I found out that people think a film poster is a good way of advertising a film as it grabs the audiences attention and they become interested in what it's about. All of the people that had taken part in the questionnaire thought it was important that a film poster's features fitted in with the genre of the film.

Film Poster Questionnaire

1. Are you male or female?

2. How old are you?

3. Do film advertisement posters grab your attention and make you want to see a film?

4. Are film posters a good way to get an audience?

5. Do you feel the colours, text etc. should suit the mood of the genre of film?

6. Is a film poster important in advertising?

Our Film Plot

Our film Plot: Alice O'Rourke was twenty two years old and terminally ill with cancer. She was sent home to die as she refused all treatment and would not let anybody help her. Three years ago, whilst in hospital, she met a girl, aged 17, who also had cancer. Her name was Aimee Jackson. Unfortunately, Aimee was sent to a care home at the age of four as her parents couldn't cope with looking after her and she was never able to track down her parents.

When Aimee turned 18, after all treatment, she was given the all clear and was released out of hospital, but Aimee and Alice stayed very close friends, being with each other every day. Alice came from a wealthy background, whilst Aimee had very little. Alice saved her money in secret to give to Aimee after she had passed away to help her find her parents where ever they were in the world and felt she wanted Aimee to fulfil her dreams as she knew she wouldn't be able to.

On the 24th May Alice passed away leaving her money to Aimee in a letter, but before the letter was found, Alice's sister Beth takes all of Alice's belongings, including her house and money. When Aimee is given the letter, she does what she knows Alice would have wanted her to do, fights for it back.

Teaser Trailer Questionnaire Results

From the questionnaire my group and I found out that after people see a film trailer it makes them want to see the film itself. Out of all of the people we asked, we got the result that most people think the cutting rate of a teaser trailer depends on the genre of the film. For example, if the film was an action it would contain alot more fast-cutting rate shots than in a romance.

We found out that half of the people asked liked the trailer to give away the storyline. However, the other half prefered not really knowing the storyline. This leaves us with the decision of deciding wether to reveal alot of the plot.

The questionnaire tells us that people find music to be quite important in a teaser trailer, this means that we will be likely to include background music (non-diagetic) to our trailer. Half of the people we asked said that a voice over wasn't important in a teaser trailer. Whereas, the other half said it was. This leaves us with the decision of including a voice over or not. I think my group and I will use a voice over as we think it will make our teaser trailer more effective.

Questionnaire on teaser trailers

To make the questionnaire's different, instead of handing out the questions on paper, my group and I decided to record everyone's answers with a voice recorder. We listened to everyone's answers and put them into graphs.

1. Are you male or female?

2. How old are you?

3. Do teaser trailers make you want to see a film?

4. Do you prefer fast or slow cutting rates?

5. Do you like teaser trailers to give away alot about the storyline in the film?

6. Do you think background music in a teaser trailer is important?

7. Do you think non-diagetic voice overs are important in a teaser trailer?

Target Audiences on Drama Films

Here is a small sample of films with the genre 'Drama':

The Lovely Bones

This film is due out this year, but having read the book and watched the trailers I think it would attract a young audience, aged between 12-35, as I know I enjoyed the book and can't wait for the film to come out. The main character is also a young girl, which would appeal to a younger audience as they would probably feel they could relate to her in some way or another.

My Sister's Keeper

After seeing the trailers and advertisements for this film I feel that it has a female dominated audience, aged between 12-50 as the film contains two young girls, which could appeal to a younger audience. I also think it would appeal to an older generation as the film is about something very common. Plus, more and more people are starting to/able to relate to it.

Inglourious Basterds

From seeing the trailers and posters for this film, I think it has a more male dominated audience as it is a war film which would appeal more to males than females this is because it contains alot of war/fighting scenes, which is stereotypically appealing to men.

Questionnaire Results/Conclusion

With our genre questionnaire, my group and I asked 30 random people (16 female, 14 male) the same questions and we found out things that will help us in producing our teaser trailer. From the results we found out that many of the people asked were aged between 17-25, this means that our target audience could be a younger generation. This could help us in advertising the product.

We also found out that people watch films both at home and at the cinema. This means that we need to make the teaser trailer appealing so the target audience goes to see the film in the cinema and then purchaces it to watch at home. This will then give us a stronger audience. From our results we also found out that people think teaser trailers should last from 30 seconds to one minute. This is enough time to give an indication of what the film is about, but doesn't give anything away - it doesn't tell the audience the story. This means the audience become intrigued and then more interested when they see posters advertising it and magazine's also.

Finally, my group and I found out that the highest result for genre was 'drama'. After recieving this result, we think it would be good to do a teaser trailer using this genre as we haven't used it before in our coursework. It was also the most popular chosen genre, meaning our film would appeal to the audience and make our film a success.

Genre Questionnaire

To make progress into the making of our teaser trailer we have conducted a questionnaire on genre to find out what kind of film our audience would like to see the most. We asked 30 random people the same questions and these are the results below.

Questionnaire:

1. How old are you?

2. Are you male or female?

3. Do you watch films?

4. Do you watch films at home or at the cinema?

5. Do teaser trailers make you want to watch a film?

6. How long do you feel a teaser trailer should be?

7. What is your favourite genre?

IPC Media Audiences

IPC Media produces over 85 iconic media brands, with print brands alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men –almost 27 million UK adults – while online brands collectively reach 20 million users every month.

IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket women.

Men's portfolio (IPC Inspire) comprises a wealth of leisure brands including Country Life, Horse & Hound, Rugby World and Decanter, as well as lifestyle brands including Nuts, Mousebreaker and NME. Today’s young and affluent men are discerning, media-elusive individuals who take their media on their own terms, both by content and delivery platform.

IPC Media is a leading content provider for today’s man. Operating across multiple platforms and experiential events IPCs iconic brands truly connect with young men offering what they want, when they want it and provide advertisers with multiple contact points to connect with and influence, the 18-34 year old male.

Mass market women's division (IPC Connect) comprises famous women's weeklies including Look, Now, Chat and Woman; TV entertainment brands including What's on TV, TVTimes and TV & Satellite Week and, online, the goodtoknow network. Most of the womens division consists of mums, there are seen to be constantly juggling tasks. Mothers take pleasure in occasional ‘me’ time, during which relaxing with a favourite magazine or visiting an inspirational website is a ‘must-do’.

IPC Media is the UK’s leading consumer publisher for mass market mothers. Their weekly magazines and websites are packed with inspiration, entertainment, information, advice, celebrity and real-life appealing to mums (and women) of all ages and attitudes.

Advertisers access these powerful communication platforms predominantly through IPC Weeklies, which represents IPC Connect [women’s weeklies] and IPX TX [television titles] in print and online.

Upmarket women's division (IPC Southbank) comprises luxury fashion brands including Marie Claire and InStyle, lifestyle brands including woman&home and essentials and home interest brands including Ideal Home, Livingetc and housetohome. Their magazines contain high quality imagery and high quality editorial - Fashion and Beauty trends and advice, Home Styling, Celebrity, Environment, Education, Business and Real World news.

Delivered to their readers through glossy magazines and exciting websites, IPC Media provides advertisers with wonderful opportunities to associate with famous media brands and connect with millions of affluent, aspirational and inspirational women.

My group and I feel that our audience is more likely to be mass market women and upmarket women, as we feel they will connect with the film more and find it more appealing than men. Also, if our poster or magazine cover was to be advertised, we think that it could appear in a magazine like Look, Now, InStyle etc. My group and I didn't think it would be appropriate for our poster or magazine cover to appear in a men's magazine like Nuts or NME.

Robert.Downey Jr. is on the cover of the lastest issue of Empire magazine for his role in Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming movie directed by Guy Richie. The techniques on the magazine cover will draw people in and make them want to watch the film itself. The colours and images used make this cover appeal to readers.

Inception teaser trailer

Here is the official teaser trailer for Inception.

This is a very appealing teaser trailer as when you are watching it the tension and anticipation builds up as you don't really find out what the film is about. It just gives you a taste of what will happen in the film. Your not told the plot of the story, you are only given a various sample of scenes that together dont add up. This makes the audience want to find out more about the film and eventually watch it.
